LHU Signs MOU with Tohoku University, Japan, to Foster Academic Exchange and Industry-Academia Collaboration

publish date : 2025-02-18 update date : 2025-04-25

Lunghwa University of Science and Technology (LHU) and the Chen-Konno Research Laboratory at Tohoku University, Japan, have executed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to fortify academic exchange and improve collaboration in research and teaching initiatives. This partnership aims to strengthen international academic research exchanges and industry-academia collaboration, share industrial technology and practical information to cultivate technical talents in relevant industries, and jointly promote technological innovation.

The Vice President of LHU, Professor Yih-Chien Chen, recently led a research team to visit Tohoku University, Japan. Chen signed the MOU with Professor Qiang Chen, Principal Investigator of the Chen-Konno Research Laboratory at Tohoku University's Graduate School of Engineering, Division of Communication Engineering, Electromagnetic Wave Engineering, in his capacity as the representative of the Microwave Communication Components Laboratory in the Department of Electrical Engineering at LHU's College of Engineering. The two institutions have agreed to enhance the exchange of faculty, students, and researchers and broaden the opportunities for students to share their educational accomplishments. Additionally, they will collaborate in a variety of academic research areas.

Professor Qiang Chen is a distinguished scholar in microwave technology, antenna, and electromagnetic engineering; an elected foreign member of the Engineering Academy of Japan, Dr. Qiang Chen has served as the Chair of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Tokyo Chapter. Tohoku University's Chen-Konno Research Laboratory concentrates on research areas, including antenna engineering, microwave/millimeter-wave technology, environmental electromagnetic engineering, and computational electromagnetics. These areas align closely with LHU's expertise in training professionals to design and test high-speed transmission interface electronic packaging and mobile communication modules.

Unlike national universities in Japan and Taiwan, Professor Chen Qiang acknowledges the benefits of LHU's simulated production line practice facilities, where pertinent equipment is frequently dispersed across various research domains led by different professors or confined to specific manufacturing processes without full integration. Vice President Chen emphasized this. Additionally, LHU can effectively enhance technology development capacity and foster deep industry connections to cultivate high-quality talent by integrating practical technical training and research capabilities through these practice bases and facilities, offering comprehensive design-to-manufacturing services to enterprises.

Vice President Yih-Chien Chen underscored that LHU's industry-academia collaboration model validates the pragmatic planning of its training bases and improves the market competitiveness of partner enterprises. Distinguished professors at Tohoku University, one of the world's top 100 universities, have acknowledged LHU's robust capabilities in fostering talent and furthering the electronics industry. This collaboration aims to broaden international perspectives in academia and industry, accelerating technological innovation in partnership with partner institutions and enterprises. The ultimate objective is to establish LHU as the premier university in Asia and develop practical talents in the electronics industry.
